EVERYDAY ACTIVITIES can turn deadly or result in long lasting disability if unsafe choices are made. A fall off a bicycle can result in a permanent brain injury. Crossing the street in a dangerous manner can cause a child to be severely injured or killed. Participating in sports activities without using appropriate safety gear can result in paralysis. Despite these dangers, through education, we can prevent some of these tragedies.
Every year, more than 1,000,000 children suffer a brain injury; 1 in 10 will live with moderate to severe impairments. ThinkFirst is dedicated to reducing injuries in children, teens and young adults - our most vulnerable populations.
Armed with the research-based educational programming available to us through our affiliation with the National Injury Prevention Foundation and our local pool of Voice for Injury Prevention (VIP) speakers, ThinkFirst-Nevada provides the knowledge and skills for children, teens and adults of all ages to make safe decisions. Our school programs are designed to reinforce the injury prevention message at crucial intervals to encourage each student to ‘think first’ before engaging in risky behavior.
The range of materials and information covered in ThinkFirst for Kids (TFFK), ThinkFirst for Youth (TFFY) and ThinkFirst for Teens (TFFT) allows us to adapt our message for audiences from preschool through adulthood.
ThinkFirst for Kids' popular Melon Drop activity:
ThinkFirst presenter drops melon wearing a proper helmet (above), then without one. Kids see the damage to the melon when no helmet is worn (below).

ThinkFirst for Kids!
Helps younger children develop lifelong safety habits. Optional fun reinforcement activities include coloring cartoons, completing word search puzzles, the Melon Drop and making Candy Spinal cords.
ThinkFirst for Youth
Expected in 2007 and the last of the trilogy,
"TFFY" is comprised of two formal curricula;
one for Grades 4 and 5 and a separate
one for Grades 6 through 8.
ThinkFirst for Teens
Our signature program features a fast paced interactive session
designed to leave students with the underlying challenge to
‘use your mind to protect your body.’
ThinkFirst For Teens
concludes with personal testimony from a
Voice for Injury Prevention (VIP) speaker*
VIP Bob Hamilton demonstrating the use of Fatal Vision goggles during a
ThinkFirst forTeens presentation.
* VIPs are speakers who have sustained a traumatic brain or spinal cord injury. VIPs share their personal experiences through ThinkFirst programs. They encourage safe behavior in the hope that they may prevent someone else from sustaining a life-altering injury. VIPs change and improve lives through convincing testimony that may lead your students to wear their helmet, buckle their safety belt or say "NO" to gangs, alcohol and drug use.
