12/2004 - Nevada Injury Prevention Participates in Grant from Paralyzed Veterans of America (PVA)

Nevada Injury Prevention is home to ThinkFirst - Nevada, the State Chapter of The National Injury Prevention Foundation (www.thinkfirst.org). ThinkFirst - Nevada was chosen as one of 35 chapters to participate in the grant awarded by the PVA to the National Injury Prevention Foundation. The grant provided materials to take the ThinkFirst for Teens (TFFT) message to over 250 students at Basic High School in Henderson.

In December 2004, Basic High School freshman students completed a pre and post presentation survey on the risks, causes and consequences of sustaining a traumatic brain or spinal cord injury. Results from these surveys were forwarded to the National ThinkFirst office for compilation and analysis. We appreciate the time and attention from each of these students.

Our thanks also, to Basic High School Health teachers Mr. Kurt Bailey and Mr. John Williams for hosting our program; to Dr. Mike Metzler, Ms. Chris Dash and Sunrise Hospital Trauma Services for printing the tests; and to our VIP Reggie Bennett.

April 2005 - ThinkFirst - Nevada wins award

ThinkFirst - Nevada was recognized as 2005's Newcomer Chapter of the Year at the 17th Annual ThinkFirst State Chapter Director's Conference in New Orleans, LA in April, 2005. The conference is held each year in conjunction with the American Association of Neurological Surgeon's (AANS) conference. The award was presented to Debbie Kreun, the Nevada State Chapter Director, at the Annual Awards Luncheon, on Sunday April 17.

Also present were two Las Vegas Voices for Injury Prevention (VIPs), CJ Arinwine and Reggie Bennett, whose attendance at the conference was made possible through a grant from the Nevada Community Foundation. The capacity building grant was provided in order to allow the VIP speakers the opportunity to learn first-hand, the history and depth of the ThinkFirst organization, as well as to develop a network of contacts to enable them to design a process to train local speakers.

January 2005 - Nevada Injury Prevention Receives Grant from Nevada Community Foundation

Our Voices for Injury Prevention (VIPs) play a vital part in our educational efforts. They participate in the ThinkFirst presentations, sharing personal testimony about living life after a traumatic brain or spinal cord injury. Along with the community health educator component of the program, they help us spread our message of "use your mind to protect your body".

Nevada Injury Prevention's capacity building grant was awarded by Nevada Community Foundation through their Southern Nevada Unity Fund. The grant will be used to send VIP speakers to the National ThinkFirst Foundation's Annual Conference in April 2005.

Upon return from the conference, the VIPs will assist in developing a training curriculum for use with future VIP speakers. This will enhance our programs by building a complete and consistent foundation and knowledge base for use as we add new speakers.
