Though motor vehicle crashes are the most common cause of these tragedies, most are not "accidents." The majority are the result of
poor choices...
like driving under the influence of alcohol or other drugs;
distracted driving, like talking or texting on cell phones, applying makeup or eating;
traffic violations like speeding or running stop signs/red lights;
drowsy driving or
aggressive driving including road rage and street racing.
How about seat belts?
Nevada has a relatively high compliance rate in national reports. Yet approximately 75% of Las Vegas area high school students polled during our ThinkFirst for Teens programs report not wearing a seat belt or riding in a vehicle with another person (generally a friend) who was not buckled, at least once in the previous two weeks.
Justification for their choices?
...because it's "not cool" to wear a seat belt,
...seat belts are uncomfortable,
...they were only going a short distance,
...they didn't want to wrinkle clothes, or
...because they (or the driver) are safe drivers.

Have YOU made any of those choices?

Helmets protect your brain. We know this now.
The choice to ski, snowboard, ride a bicycle, skateboard or scooter without a helmet can result in a severe brain injury in the event of one fall or crash.
Many parents we see at our helmet events ask why we're so set on getting a helmet on every head. They say they never wore a bike helmet when they were kids...

In the United States, over 40% of homes with children also have guns, many choose to keep them unlocked or loaded. Do you know if there is a gun in the home where your child plays?
Cuts, bruises, burns, broken bones and even torn
muscles or ligaments can heal.
Your brain and spinal cord are different.
Surviving a car crash, a fall from a bicycle or a gunshot wound that result in a traumatic brain injury or paralyzing spinal cord injury will likely lead to a lifelong disability. That's right, life long.
And it can happen in an instant.
To anyone.
Regardless of age, education,
profession, income, race or religion.
Doctors can't fix most brain or spinal cord injuries,
the only "cure" is PREVENTION.
