Nevada Injury Prevention was founded in March 2004 with the goal of offering programs to address a wide range of topics relating to preventable injuries. As an immediate first step in our organization's development, we became the Nevada State Chapter of the ThinkFirst National Injury Prevention Foundation. Thus, ThinkFirst-Nevada was born. Since that time, we have learned that "ThinkFirst" is much easier to remember than Nevada Injury Prevention, so are going with that as our main identifier. But do not be confused. We are one in the same and hope that you will grow to recognize us either way.
ThinkFirst-Nevada is part of a network of over 200 chapters in this country and a growing number of international chapters. ThinkFirst programs have been in operation around the U.S. since 1986, and are a tried and true product delivering life-saving information in a clear, concise and valid manner. In our first year and with a total volunteer core, we made presentations at schools, participated in school carnivals, employer health fairs, established sponsors to begin our helmet giveaway program, spoke on radio talk shows and received our first grant.
Our passion was noticed, and ThinkFirst-Nevada was honored as Newcomer Chapter of the Year at the ThinkFirst State Chapter Director's Annual Conference in New Orleans in April 2005. Then in the Fall of 2006, we were featured in the prestigious IN BUSINESS Las Vegas' annual Community Giving Supplement. A few weeks later, we received an award for our educational contribution to Las Vegas by the University of Las Vegas' (UNLV) Safe Community Partnership program. We continue to work hard to share potentially life-changing information and materials (like helmets) and we welcome your help.
Our long range dreams include establishing a strong program for issues specific to seniors, like falls prevention; offering a program for employers that will help them identify and eliminate workplace hazards; expanding the work we are doing in the ongoing urgent areas of safety represented by motor vehicle occupant programs, bicycle and pedestrian safety messages and everything in between. We monitor our program statistics regularly and add new programs as our growth and resources allow.
As you browse our site, you will likely notice that teens and young children were chosen as our target group for the first three to five years. However, please keep in mind that our main ThinkFirst program message can also be presented to adults of all ages at any time.
Through ThinkFirst presentations at schools, booths at health fairs, carnivals and other community events, we share our message using a variety of video, lecture, interactive games, props and our most powerful tool, our Voice for Injury Prevention (VIP) speakers.
We distribute safety materials, write safety oriented articles and share safety and prevention information through radio and television interviews. We work with local partners to give out free helmets and teach bicycle safety to kids; present falls prevention information to seniors and assist local organizations with similar health/wellness and prevention efforts.
